JOURNEYS OF LACTIC ABSTRACTION,

MELANIE JACKSON AND ESTHER LESLIE, CABINET, FALL 2016 – WINTER 2017

For this project, I was given a piece of copy that I had to visual translate into a Zine. The section of copy was given to me at random by my tutor. This challenged me to design something I wasn’t particularly interested in as it was completely unplanned. However, it was good industry practice to take with me in the future.

This project was full of experimenting with different grid layouts, colour schemes and bold typography pages. We had to consider the pace throughout the zine, to keep the reader interested and wanting to keep turning the page. This was achieved by creating a flatplan so i could see the layout and order of my pages.

My InDesign skills significantly improved throughout this project. I was encouraged to explore the different ways I could design, by using different medias, compositions and fonts. I explored bold fonts to draw attention to the words and ways to design a double page spread, using a grid as a base for the composition.

This book is one of my favourite pieces of work. During this project, I enjoyed experimenting with different medias, multimedia in particular, to create eye catching designs. Learning how to layout type was a challenge. However, I believe I overcame this through practising layout paragraphs using placeholder copy.
